We have all heard the admonitions to keep your vehicle maintained, tires at the correct pressure and to drive less to save on petrol. Okay, okay, so we all know this and are doing these things in an effort to save money.
But there are two ways of saving on fuel that is less publicised but just as important.
First of all, you must know that supermarkets often offer the lowest petrol prices. Petrol is not their only source of income, which is why they can offer it for less than the petrol chains. Besides being already lower per litre at the pump, most supermarket chains offer discounts on fuel with a certain level of purchase from the store.
Remember that you are not saving money if you drive twelve miles out of your way to buy fuel at a supermarket. Likewise, if you are spending more money at the supermarket than you need to just for the discount!
However, if you know your budget for groceries and you shop at the same store often, this is a great way to save on petrol. Simply ensure that you fill up your vehicle after you are done with your food shopping. It is not uncommon to see up to a 5p discount if you purchase £50 or so of goods. While it may not seem like a lot, all those 5p discounts add up in the year.
The next way to save is even less obvious but must be considered. Ask your boss if you can work from home. Even if you can do this one day a week, your savings in food and fuel will be huge. There are obviously industries where this is not going to be possible. For instance, a doctor cannot suddenly decide to work from home. But for many jobs, working from home is a viable option.
Present your pitch to the boss in a convincing manner. Speak about the savings he will enjoy, such as reduced electric costs if your computer is not running even mention the teas and coffees! Implore him to allow you to do a trial run and see how it goes. If he will agree with your idea, you will find that you save a lot of money each week.
Mention to the boss there is even a “National Work From Home Day”
With just these two simple tips you can drastically reduce your petrol bill. Then you can use your money for something more fun, such as a badly needed holiday!
